Cover story December 2008: TW Metals group

Stainless Steel Focus Editor Richard Clark recently visited the impressive TW Metals distribution and processing facility in Southampton, UK, where he had the opportunity to meet up with Gail Thomas, managing director of international operations at TW Metals, as well as managing director of subsidiary Philip Cornes, and their respective subsidiaries in France, Poland, India, Singapore, and China. Thomas, who is clearly passionate about the areas in which TW Metals and Philip Cornes specialise, which cover both aerospace and ?commercial?, stainless and nickel alloys, gave us a deeper insight into these two well-known companies. Thomas joined Tubesales, now TW, in 1978, and after a period in the USA, moved back to the UK in 2004. Since her return, the company?s international operations have experienced solid growth, and market share has continued to increase. She has now been managing director for three years. .

Cover story March 2008: Viraj
Providing stainless steel engineering products

In 1992, Viraj started manufacturing stainless steel in the state promoted industrial area of Tarapur. It bought a sick unit and revived the induction furnace and its eroded market share. Initially the focus was on the local stainless steel market, but the vision had always been to sell internationally. The company got its assets and productivity in line, making more grades of stainless steel and mastering the process of making stainless steel through the scrap process. “The initial years were tough. I took over the task of creating customer channels. On the global level, there are stockists and contractors who float the major enquiries. They have the rights and the approvals. Price was the only deciding factor”, says Mr. Neeraj Kochhar, co-founder and the chairman of the Viraj Group of companies. “We had to increase our production capacity to spread the fixed cost over a larger turnover.”
